"Up to five pro-Russian gunmen have been killed near the eastern Ukrainian city of Slovyansk according to the Ukrainian Interior Ministry after the Ukrainian army moved to demolish illegal checkpoints on its outskirts.

One checkpoint was abandoned to the north when five armoured personnel carriers arrived with what appeared well-armed and disciplined troops flying the Ukrainian flag, but latest reports say when the troops left after demolishing it, pro-Russian forces returned.

Three more checkpoints were destroyed to the north-east, and this is where the exchange of fire produced the casualties. Rebel sources said two more pro-Russian fighters were killed on a road leading to the town of Svyatogorsk, which the Ukrainian army claimed to have recaptured on Wednesday.

Russian President Vladimir Putin issued a warning on Thursday that any use of its army by Ukraine in the east would be a "very serious crime" and have "consequences".

"The agreement, approved unanimously at the Western Pacific Naval Symposium in the eastern Chinese port city of Qingdao, is targeted at "establishing international standards in relation to the use of the sea," according to a text of the agreement provided by a US Navy officer.

Although not legally binding, China's adoption of the code indicates its increased willingness to engage with its neighbours, US Navy officials said.

The US, Japan, South Korea, Philippines, Vietnam, Malaysia, Thailand, Australia, Canada, Mexico, Chile, Peru and several other nations also signed on."

"Biden said Russia needs to act "without delay," adding: "We will not allow this to become an open-ended process."

Yatsenyuk was harsher in his characterisation of Russia. "No country should be able to behave like an armed bandit," he said. "Russia should stick to its international commitments and obligations. They should not behave as gangsters in the modern century."

The warnings for Russia from both leaders demonstrated the fragility of last week's multinational agreement.

Biden also announced the United States will provide an additional $US50 million ($A53.78 million) to help Ukraine's beleaguered government with political and economic reforms."

Once Hedge Funds, and investors have purchased the distressed properties, many fail to make unit improvements, and tenants suffer illnesses, such as asthma. The tenants are also confused when the properties change many hands, who to even contact to get repairs done.

So this is definitely an area that needs rules to protect tenants from neglect by property owners whomever they may be. The buyers should also be required, in my opinion, to send each tenant a letter when the property changes hands, along with contact info for the new property buyer. - Cynthia

Scientist Say: Climate Change: ‘Abrupt,’ ‘Unpredictable,’ ‘Irreversible’ and ‘Highly Damaging’

"In a rare move, the world’s largest scientific society released a report nudging the public to wake up to the scientifically sound and increasingly frightening reality of climate change.

“As scientists, it is not our role to tell people what they should do or must believe about the rising threat of climate change,” the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) wrote in the introduction to its new report, “What We Know.” http://whatweknow.aaas.org/  “But we consider it to be our responsibility as professionals to ensure, to the best of our ability, that people understand what we know: human-caused climate change is happening, we face risks of abrupt, unpredictable and potentially irreversible changes and responding now will lower the risk and cost of taking action.” - John Light, Bill Moyers Report

KIEV, Ukraine — "For two weeks, the mysteriously well-armed, professional gunmen known as “green men” have seized Ukrainian government sites in town after town, igniting a brush fire of separatist unrest across eastern Ukraine. Strenuous denials from the Kremlin have closely followed each accusation by Ukrainian officials that the world was witnessing a stealthy invasion by Russian forces.

Now, photographs and descriptions from eastern #Ukraine endorsed by the #Obama administration on Sunday suggest that many of the green men are indeed Russian military and intelligence forces — equipped in the same fashion as Russian special operations troops involved in annexing the #Crimea region in February. Some of the men photographed in Ukraine have been identified in other photos clearly taken among Russian troops in other settings." - NYT

"The bulk of Ms. Wadewitz’s work at Wikipedia concerned biographies of women, particularly writers and thinkers from the era that she studied to earn her Ph.D. An early contribution, or “edit,” was in 2006, when she “punched up the intro” to the article about Jane Austen, to note Austen’s “masterful use of both indirect speech and irony.”

More than 49,000 edits later, Ms. Wadewitz had created a whole library of articles about figures like the early feminist writer Mary Wollstonecraft, the children’s book writer Mary Martha Sherwood and the “woman of letters” Anna Laetitia Barbauld. Each of these biographical articles was labeled a “featured article” — the highest praise her fellow editors can give — appearing on the site’s home page."  - NYT
